It is fascinating how many people are still unaware of the microplastics contained in most teabags. Whilst there are many brands now using biodegradable teabags many are far from doing this switch.  Tea bags are known for being quick, simple and convenient; but loose leaf tea is 100% natural, unprocessed and contains a plethora of health properties and antioxidants. In this article we share with you some of the physical benefits but more importantly the sensual, mindful aspects of brewing loose leaf tea.

At Pink Tea Cafe, we love loose leaf tea not only because it's a solution which is plastic-free but also because of its physical nature; the full essence of tea can be captured without it needing alteration to fit inside a teabag. When you brew loose leaf tea it has room for the leaves to absorb water and expand as they infuse, enabling minerals, vitamins, aromas and oils to be extracted more easily. Tea inside a teabag is limited by the size of the teabag and the industry adapted by filling teabags with smaller particles of tea as opposed to whole leaves. The surface area increases as well as the speed of infusion. It is typical of our ‘instant gratification’ and convenience attitude!

Teabags began dominating the industry in around the 1950’s. Recently, pyramid bags and other larger sized bags have enabled leaves to expand more and thus create a better brew. Despite these innovations many tea connoisseurs still prefer loose leaf tea. This is because the essence of tea-drinking is not limited to the consumption of the beverage itself. It is a ritual, an experience that one finds themself enjoying in the moment. We believe that our life is a string of moments and actions. Take a snapshot of the moment you brew your loose leaf tea and you realise it is a wondrous multisensory experience which can bring you back to the present. No matter how small, it is moments like these than enable us to transcend our circumstances. The actions, the aromas, the aesthetics, the sound of pouring and of course the gratifying taste.
